Self-Managed Super Funds

Self-Managed Super Funds

Accounting & Taxation - Self-Managed Super Funds
Have you thought about putting your superannuation into a self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF)?  SMSF’s are the fastest growing product within Australia’s superannuation industry. Members gain greater control over their assets and where their funds are invested.

There are a number of benefits:

  • A SMSF gives you total control of your superannuation by allowing you to choose whether you invest in shares, property, term deposits, cash, CFDs and more.  You can now even borrow to buy an investment property.

  • A SMSF can be the most cost effective type of superannuation fund.  Many organisations, however, base their fees on a percentage of the fund’s balance rather than an hourly rate.  This means the more value you have in your SMSF, the more you get charged, regardless of the amount of accounting work involved!

  • When you commence a pension or transition to retirement, in some circumstances the SMSF tax rate falls to NIL. This means you can generate unlimited income and capital gains and will pay NO tax after commencing a pension.

  • Your SMSF is entitled to receive refunds of franking credits on Australian share dividends. This is not the same as in commercial superannuation funds that decide how to allocate the tax refund or retain it if they choose.

  • It is possible for members to make contributions of assets into a SMSF instead of cash. Importantly, only certain assets listed in the superannuation regulations can be transferred, such as shares, managed funds and commercial property. You cannot transfer a block of land, a home or investment property that is in the member’s names into the SMSF.

  • A SMSF allows you to conveniently and legally pass your benefits to your beneficiaries in the event of your death, keeping your SMSF assets under the same tax advantaged umbrella after your death.
